[UTL Throw-Back] Shephurd - Revival of the illest Vol. 1 (2008)
And here it is… This is my first attempt at a tape, way back in 2008.. by this time I had only been making beats for 1 year at the very most.
I printed off a very small number of hard copies and gave them all away to friends,family & people at parties.
IMO, Most of the beats aint half bad still - Obviously not my greatest work to date, but a MASSIVE part of my music history.
- Good Life - Used by Cee, Konflikt & MC Harris.
- My Eyez - One of my very first beats, made in 2007 less than a month after I made my first ever attempt at a beat.
- 14BigL - This beat was made for Negative (Lady Esque). It was the first beat I ever made that had vocals on.
- Listen as I whistle - This catchy tune ended up being used by Cee.

[UTL] Shephurd - The Escape Instrumental (Live)
I’m playing around with the gear I got to see If I can put together a Live performance version of my music.. It seems my biggest problem is not having a grunty enough laptop.. NI Maschine is an amazing drum machine, but requires the processing from the computer, which isn’t at all powerful.
I would like more of a live production style doing this, but my computer can only process a couple of samples at a time, hence why here I have ended up with triggering loops instead.
..This is just the start of what I hope will become my future in performance.. Keep an eye out xD
I’m a little off-time in this video thanks to being bumped, and clawed by the cat ‘Muddles’ as I was performing.. Its still pretty legit tho haha

After a break, we are back into it!
- New work from Rob Ree is in the mix with tracks featuring his brother Dirt Boy..
- TwoJaam’s first mixtape has just been finished and ready to be released..
- Misaya’s 1st Trip-Hop EP “The Escape” is ready to be mixed and currently being prepared
- and I just got off the phone with True, who is currently in USA, about preparing a new solid stack of work to blow NZ away with.
As well as putting in mad work on the recording side of things, we have set up a regular gig spot at Rising Sun, K’Rd, Auckland.. Our first gig for the year Rap-A-Holics Anonymous Went off great with a stack of amazing performers - Most of them will be back for the next Rap-A-Holice Anonymous meeting on the 26th May! keen an eye out for the flyer coming soon!

Since 2007 I have been learninf the hard way about the ins & outs of working with music.. Mostly self-taught, I started making beats using Ableton Live. Just basic beats to begin with then eventually moving onto more musical beats as well as the ol sample-based stuff..
..I created UTL - Under The Land back in 2007 on Bebo as a group for people to meet others.. that quickly turned into somewhat of a label… My first project I worked on was a Mixtape for Negative (Now known as Lady Esque).. I learnt alot from producing the majority of the tape.. A good introduction into the world creating mixtapes..
Since graduating from SAE Institute, I have been working closely with a group of good friends - True, Misaya & Rob Ree and my Cousin TwoJaam to form what is now the official roster of UTL Records
These days, After working with stacks of talented Vocalists and other Producers from different genres of music, I’m broke… LOL.. But for real, It’s ALL good.. I make music with what little I have to make it with - The true essence of Hip Hop.
I’m just a regular guy with a mad passion for music.. I make it for the love of music - I think that is a MUST if you come to me wanting to collab. I know music can be a business, but for real.. I make music that I enjoy personally first and foremost.. Anything that can create a living within music comes second..
So as for me and my future in music, I create what sounds good to me.. Thats the love.. If you would like to feature my work in your own work..Thats the business.
2011 was an amazing year for the UTL Family.. Our first UTL branded gigs, Lots of wrok from the UTL roster was released, Features left right n center.. And all round good times making music and chilling with the family.
…Onto 2012!
